This very nice pair handmade mittens use wolverine fur because, unlike most other animal fur, snow and ice won't stick to the hairs. This pair has a cord that is meant to pass from one mitten, up though a sleeve, across the back ... and ... down to the other mitten through the other sleeve.
The connecting cord allows the user to pull off one or both mittens and let them dangle ... without falling in the snow or water. This way they don't get wet or lost.
